'Sha Zhou! (beautiful desert oasis), was the hub of middle
‘and eastern sik routes in ancient times The Caves of the
Thousand Buddhas (Mogao Caves) are at nearby
Giantodong. The tawn and its environs were long &
gateway between central Asia and China, and the
frescoes in the caves, painted from the Sth cent. to the
13th cent., show Indian, Greco-Roman, and Iranian
influences

various points along the Silk Road(s).
